Acknowledging the Land
The communities in Halton Region, as we know it today, are abundant in history and modern traditions of many First Nations and the Métis. From the Anishinaabe to the Attawandaron, the Haudenosaunee, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the Métis - these lands surrounding the Great Lakes are steeped in Indigenous history.
This territory is mutually covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy, the Ojibway and other allied Nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.
As a settler-ally living on these treaty lands ,I recognize my responsibility to honour and respect the four directions, land, waters, plants, animals, ancestors that walked before us, and all the wonderful elements of creation that exist.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation for sharing their traditional territory with our community."
